Increasing compound drought and hot event over the Tibetan Plateau and its effects on soil water

•Three indices (SPI, STI and SSMI) were respectively employed to monitor droughts, hot events, and soil water scarcity happening on the Tibetan Plateau (TP).•Due to climate warming, the probability of CEDHs on the TP has increased significantly.•CEDHs generally caused greater risks of soil water scarcity on TP than hot events or droughts did.
