Synthesis of magnetic targeted delivery microcapsules and its anti-corrosion self-healing behavior in epoxy resin coatings

•In this paper, we proposed a new method for preparing MDTMs used for resin base self-healing coatings, the size of the microcapsules can be controlled within a narrow span of 80–173 μm.•We used SKP and EIS to investigate the self-healing process and performances, sufficient healing agent concentrates at the crack and cures immediately to form a complete film which prolongs the diffusion of corrosion medium.•The magnetic particles shorten the releasing routine when coating is damaged, more microcapsules are concentrated near the metal and enhance the healing efficiency than traditional SHC.
