•Cohesive element stiffness, stress, and fracture energy were analyzed.•The compressive behavior is controlled by Mode Ⅰ and Mode Ⅱ fracture parameters.•The tensile behaviors primarily controlled by Mode Ⅰ fracture mode parameters.•A method for predicting the characteristic of cohesive zone model was proposed.
