•Peritherapeutic mortality is linked to toxicity or tumor progression.•In this series, mortality during or after definitive oncology therapy was low.•Prevalence of peritherapeutic death was highest for HNC, GIT, CNS and NSCLC.•Patient selection employing ECOG-PS is key to further improve quality-of-care.
