Relationship between serum neuron-specific enolase and EEG after cardiac arrest: A reappraisal

•The relationship between EEG and neuron specific enolase (NSE) has been previously described, but without considering the influence of EEG background.•NSE is higher in patients with repetitive epileptiform discharges on continuous, discontinuous, and burst-suppression.•NSE is however lower with epileptiform features on suppression, likely reflecting the need of viable neurons to generate them.
