•COF-300 shows very high adsorption capacities towards PAHs.•COF-300/PVDF composite as a new adsorbent shows reduced mass transfer resistances.•The new adsorbent with aligned microchannels eliminates flow maldistribution.•COF-300/PVDF shows superior removal rate and adsorption capacity than COF-300 powder.
