•Cinder increased 54.61% of CH4 from solid-state anaerobic digestion of wheat straw.•Multi-vacancy, hydroxyl groups, and trace elements of cinder are favorable to CH4.•Cinder increases the abundance of bacteria associated with hydrolysis.•Cinder contributed to the switch from hydrogenophilic to acetylated methanogenesis.•Cinder contributed to enzymes in hydrolysis phase and genes encoding CH4 metabolism.
