•The cobalt–nickel nanoparticles were fixed within zeolite crystals.•The fixed structure improved the reducing resistance of metal species.•The irreducible metal species efficiently hindered the carburization to improve the catalyst durability.•The fixed catalyst efficiently catalyzed the dry reforming of methane with superior coking and sintering resistance.
