Enhancing adsorption capacity and herbicidal efficacy of 2,4-D through supramolecular self-assembly: Insights from cocrystal engineering to solution chemistry

•Cocrystals of 2,4-D and phenazine (PHE) were prepared by mechanochemical and solution methods.•2,4-D - PHE cocrystal could dramatically reduce the solubility and release rate of 2,4-D.•The aqueous solution of the cocrystal exhibited enhanced soil adsorption capacity and lower leaching characteristics.•The weed control effect of 2,4-D - PHE cocrystal was doubled under simulated rainfall circumstances.•Cocrystal engineering-based supramolecular self-assembly can be extended from solid form to solution.
