•Ultrafine and monodispersed silica aerogel microspheres have been synthesized.•The synthetic strategy is one-pot and surfactant-free.•Outstanding sub-ambient cooling of 9.1 °C in the daytime is achieved.•The aerogels can resist external drastic temperature changes.
