•Phycocolloids from the red algae were obtained.•FTIR spectra of phycocolloids exhibit bands of sulfate groups consistent with SPs.•All phycocolloids obtained exhibit antiviral activity against HSV-2.•Phycocolloids from A. chilense agar and M. laminarioides show selective index > 10.
