Influence of pin-fin patterns and geometry on the effectiveness of jet impingement boiling – A computational study

•A jet boiling model is successfully validated against experimental data.•The dry-out area contributions displayed cyclic behaviour over time.•The decrease in flow obstruction decreased local dry-out around pin-fins.•Heat transfer is found to be mainly linked to surface augmentation.•A star pin-fin arrangement eliminates local dry-out.
