•The eco-friendly SA-TiO2 nanoparticle was synthesized via a facile process.•SA-TiO2 improves the tribological properties of oil lubricants under extreme pressure.•SA-TiO2 forms a high-strength and stable protective film on metal surfaces.•Eco-friendly SA-TiO2 can lower the usage of environmentally unfriendly SIB additive.•The demonstration experiment confirms the outstanding EP property of SA-TiO2 in practical applications.
