•Surface of Ag2S colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) was reconstructed by thiolation process.•The thiolation induced reoxidiation of undesirable metallic Ag on the CQD surface.•Thiolated CQD exhibited enhanced infrared photoluminescence owing to the removal of their Ag vacancies.•The mechanism of surface reconstruction in Ag2S CQDs has been discussed.
