Abstract
•Fe3O4 nanooctahedrons exposed with polar {111} crystal planes have been prepared.•The Fe3O4 nanooctahedrons show higher sensitivity than Fe3O4 commercial powders.•The sensitivity is proportional to the density of 3-coordinated Fe atoms at (111) plane.•The 3-coordinated Fe atom is found to act as an active site for gas sensing.•The active Fe atoms adsorb oxygen, create electrons and catalyze sensing reactions.
