•Calibrated CLM5BGCCrop simulates CH4 emissions well at both site and global scale.•Soil moisture and temperature are key controlling factors of cropland CH4 emissions.•CH4 emissions from rice are 1 to 2 magnitudes higher than those from wheat and corn.•Extreme heat and precipitation reduced and increased CH4 emissions, respectively.•The timing of extreme weather events is crucial in affecting CH4 emissions.
