Twisted memories: Addiction-related engrams are strengthened by desire thinking

•Associative learning mechanisms play a central role in addiction.•The coactivation strength of two memories during retrieval adjusts their associations.•Desire thinking involves the prefiguration of positive addiction-related information.•We showed that desire thinking may increase the strength of addiction-related memory associations.
