•Acceptance of sharing roads with FAVs was studied among drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.•Pedestrians reported lowest intention towards sharing roads with FAVs.•Risk profile had a significant association with road users’ sharing intention.•Drivers and cyclists in a lower-risk group were more likely to share roads with FAVs.•Age, gender, and exposure time on roads played a significant role for specific groups.
