Understanding the new trends in pedestrian injury distribution and mechanism through data linkage and modeling

•Striking vehicle type for pedestrian crashes has changed markedly from 20 years ago.•Pedestrian chest injuries increased significantly caused by pickup trucks and SUVs.•PedAEB is less effective in reducing chest injuries than head and leg injuries.•This study highlights the importance of chest injury prevention for pedestrians.
