A coupled equilibrium boundary layer model with stable water isotopes and its application to local water recycling

•Developed an equilibrium boundary layer model for stable water isotope analyses.•Estimated a local water recycling ratio of 0.29 ± 0.12 for the Upper Midwest, US.•Local water recycling is shown to modify the continental isotope effect.•Future warming and elevated irrigation are expected to enhance local water recycling.
