•Clostridium phage ZWPH-P21 can specifically lyse C. perfringens type G.•ZWPH-P21 has a good adaptability to different environments.•ZWPH-P21 has good disinfection effect on C. perfringens of chicken.•ZWPH-P21 can form "halo" on agar plates, suggesting to encode depolymerase.
