Abstract
•Hypermethylation in the GAD2 gene promoter was correlated with opioid use disorder.•Biomarkers based on 10 CpG sites could diagnose patients with opioid use disorder.•Associations between opioid use duration and dose and GAD2 methylation were found.•TFs TFAP2A, Arnt and Runx1 bind to target sequences including the detected CpG sites.
