(Not) swimming with the big fish: Primary school students’ competence satisfaction and frustration in high-ability pull-out classes

•We examined reference group effects on competence satisfaction and frustration.•Pull-out class students reported more competence satisfaction and less frustration.•Selectivity was associated with more competence satisfaction and less frustration.•These findings suggest assimilation effects over big-fish-little-pond-effects.
