•FeOOH@PEDOT is developed to enhance the dispersibility and conductivity of FeOOH.•O-vacancy and N-doping in N-Fe2O3−x@PEDOT can increase conductivity and active sites.•The engineered N-Fe2O3−x@PEDOT exhibit excellent performance in supercapacitors.
