Numerical full-wave EMC investigation of a radio-frequency generator

Abstract An essential component of “NewSpace” missions are electric thrusters, thus each component of the assembly must be safe and reliable. Without electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements, reliable operation cannot be guaranteed. The following work deals with the electromagnetic characteristics of a radio-frequency (RF) generator (RFG), which is operated with a radio-frequency ion thruster (RIT). A 3D full-wave electromagnetic simulation is created to identify the EMC properties of the RFG and to perform EMC optimizations during developments. Measurements validate the simulation. Through the combination of measurement and simulation further EMC quantities, like cabling radiation, are calculated, which show the importance of optimization measures to ensure EMC compatibility.
