Nanocomposite Materials for Emerging Supercapacitor Applications: Recent Progress

The use of renewable materials for the development of sustainable supercapacitors has been explored on a large scale for energy production and storage. Biomass-based materials that are also biorenewable are an excellent source of carbon precursors and are explored in supercapacitor applications because of some of their properties, such as abundant availability, lack of expansiveness, different morphology, good mechanical properties, and, importantly, environmental friendliness and renewability. This chapter highlights the progress in the performance of supercapacitors fabricated by materials derived from biorenewable sources—such as cellulose, activated carbon, polymer, and lignin—for supercapacitor application. The chapter also highlights the changes in performance of the supercapacitor electrode prepared with materials such as graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and transition metal oxide.
