Abstract
One of the major health concerns, worldwide, is the incidence of chronic wounds and their treatment costs. The conventional treatment for wound healing involves skin grafting, collagen dressing, or incorporation of growth factors in the wound. Skin grafting is a great treatment option for replacing epidermis, only if there is not extensive damage and sufficient undamaged skin is available. Over the last couple of years, new advances have been made and tissue-engineered skin substitutes have evolved tremendously. However, there are still some hurdles and research is ongoing for the development of full-thickness functional skin substitute with no issues in angiogenesis and vascularization. This chapter highlights an overview of the advancements in the skin tissue engineering from the decellularized matrices, their application and translational challenges.
