Abstract
Abstract Background Perforating trauma with intraorbital foreign body (IOrbFb) is a relatively rare occurrence, which is seldom reported. For this study, we analyzed a series of patients with perforating trauma with IOrbFb who attended our center to report its essential characteristics and general prognosis. Methods We conducted a retrospective chart review of 31 consecutive patients with perforating trauma with IOrbFb who were admitted to the Eye and ENT Hospital of Fudan University between 2014 and 2018. The Pearson’s and Spearman’s rank correlation was used to determine the relationships between final visual acuity and other clinical factors. Results Thirty patients (96.8%) were male and one (3.2%) was female. Eighteen patients (58.1%) had an ocular trauma score (OTS) of 1, eight patients (25.8%) had a score of 2, and five (16.1%) had a score of 3. At the end of follow-up, visual acuity was 20/40 or better in three patients (9.7%), between 20/50 and 20/200 in six patients (19.4%), 20/200 or worse in six patients (19.4%), and 16 patients (51.6%) had no light perception. Fourteen patients (45.2%) underwent evisceration or enucleation.ConclusionWe find that the visual prognosis of perforating trauma with IOrbFb is closely related to OTS and that removal of IOrbFb with current orbital surgery techniques is safe.
