•This work reports a novel O3-type NaNi0.2Ti0.6Fe0.1Mg0.1O2 anode material.•The O3-type anode material is prepared via classical solid-state reaction.•Limited Fe and Mg-swap improves the structural and cycling stability.•The O3-type anode material delivers the charge capacity of 128.48 mAh/g.
