Local Graft Irradiation for Acute, Medication Refractory Transplant Rejection of a Pancreas Alone Graft: A Case Report

Abstract

Pancreas transplant remains the only curative treatment for diabetes mellitus. Following transplant, patients remain on lifelong immunosuppression to prevent graft rejection. Rejection is a serious complication of transplant requiring aggressive treatment. Here we present a case of a patient admitted with medication refractory acute pancreas graft rejection. Salvage low dose, local graft radiation treatment to dose of 8 Gy in 4 fractions resulted in improvement in laboratory markers of acute rejection and pancreatic function.
