LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 cathode modified by nitroxide radical for lithium-ion battery with high capacity

LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 batteries have been confirmed to be used in the new generation of electric vehicles. Hence, improving the capacity of LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 batteries is of great significance to increase the endurance of electric vehicles. In this study, we propose a new strategy for modifying commercial LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 by nitroxide radicals, which is generated by N-Methylpyrrolidone pyrolysis promoted by Super P carbon black (Super P). Nitroxide radicals on the surface of active materials are characterized by electron spin resonance. The nitroxide radicals modification contributes to the extra capacity, which increases the specific capacity to 267 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C. This paper provides a new way to enhance specific capacity by introducing free radicals on the surface of LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 electrode.
