Influence of Grounded Shield on Cable Broadband Impedance Spectroscopy Measurement

Abstract
Fast and accurate cable fault detection is the key to reduce economic losses and improve electrical system reliability. Broadband impedance spectroscopy (BIS) is a new type of cable fault location technology, but the application of BIS technology in the actual field is still less. In particular, the grounding of cable shield in actual operation is lack of consideration is one of the reasons. In view of the grounding situation which widely occurs in the actual cable, this paper analyzes the influence of the cable shield grounding on the measuring circuit, and carries out the measurement experiments of different grounding conditions under the open and short circuit faults at the terminal of the cable. The results show that the grounding of the cable shield does not affect the accuracy of the BIS data. This simplifies the operation and reduces the risk of electric shock during the measurement, which has positive significance for the application of BIS technology in practice.
