Health Services Research

In this chapter, we highlight study designs commonly used in the field of health services research. Using the conceptual framework of the five phases of surgical care developed by the American College of Surgeons, we provide examples of how these study designs have been successfully implemented as examples of transformational research and summarize the most frequently used standardized reporting guidelines. We provide a review of how health services research differs from quality improvement.
