Theranostic applications of nanoemulsions in pulmonary diseases

Nanoemulsions (NEs) were developed and flourished as an epitome of nanotechnology influencing on various pharmaceuticals. Despite the numerous impediments and daunting efforts to reach accurate detection and efficient treatment for recondite diseases such as cancer, further research is still needed to fulfill this gap. NEs provided multiple epitomes where they acted as nanocarriers for various detection moieties as well as multiple synthetic and naturally derived therapeutic agents. This malleable capability in addition to their ease of fabrication, safety, and biocompatibility elicited them as attractive research niche to develop scintillating and novel theranostic tools for pulmonary diseases as will be illustrated in this chapter. Moreover, they can be formulated as injectable, oral, or inhaled dosage forms without provoking any irritation or formulation-related adverse effects. However, as many other nano-based theranostic applications, the ongoing efforts should proceed till the NEs achieve successful production on large scale and thus become commercially available.
