Abstract
Current seismic design practice is commonly performed by code-based equivalent static force design procedures, where a structure is designed for strength based on the elastic analysis and checked for drift. However, the code-based design approach may lead to large uncertainties in the postyield behavior and energy dissipation, under strong earthquakes. To promote the reliable and predictable structural seismic performance, this chapter presents the method of seismic resistance design of reinforced concrete (RC) moment frames, buckling-restrained braced RC moment frames, and steel plate shear wall-RC moment frames. The results demonstrated that the developed design method can achieve the desired yield mechanism and the performance parameters can be quantified.
