Abstract
The relentless increase in the level of green-house gases particularly carbon dioxide unleashes global warming and a cascade of environmental impacts like extreme heat wave, drought and wildfire, heavier precipitation, flooding and tropical wind storms. In the past few years, efficient energy production and storage technologies have reduced the CO2 from combustion activities up to 10 percent meanwhile increased energy demands and deforestation as a consequence of industrial enterprises are stark reminders that we need to introduce post-combustion carbon dioxide conversion into useful products. The use of conventional ammonia alcohol solutions like monoethanolamine has been challenged for high energy consumption. The ionic liquids for their unique physicochemical properties and tunable viscosity, density, and polarity can offer a lot of opportunities regarding carbon capture, storage, and/or subsequent conversion. The present chapter will high the key features of ionic liquids that fit them to be used as adsorbents. Besides, the reader will find update information regarding the application of ILs in carbon capturing and storage.
