Abstract
The inclusion of digital resource content in library catalogs and discovery services provides another avenue for search and discovery. The library catalog is a known and trusted source of scholarly content discovery, but the multiple steps required to convert records from common repository formats to Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) 21 bibliographic records for loading to library Online Public Access Catalogs (OPACs) kept these systems largely siloed. Library discovery services with Open Archives Initiative/Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) feed capabilities provide an opportunity to easily integrate digital resource content from OAI-PMH-compliant repository platforms. The Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, at The George Washington University (GW), explored several methods for loading content from its Digital Commons institutional repository (IR) to its discovery service, Primo. However, the OAI-PMH feed method created too much duplicative content in Primo and was therefore discontinued. In this chapter, a more selective method that incorporates Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project content with enhanced metadata is described. DNP projects were selected for their unique, high-quality content, which typically goes unpublished elsewhere, and their full-text availability in the IR. This project provides a model for future content inclusion as usage of these objects in Primo has been tracked and evaluated.
