Media use and youth with disabilities

The field of children, adolescents, and media has greatly expanded over the past few decades. With the rise of the internet and social media, and widespread use of smartphones among youth, much attention has been given to media use and effects for this population. However, a great deal of the research, along with resulting recommendations, is designed to apply to a broad population of youth. Yet, we know that youth with disabilities have a unique and complex relationship to media. With this chapter, we seek to provide an overview of what is currently known concerning media research specific to youth with disabilities and identify gaps in the field and questions to address going forward.
