Performance and emission analysis of oxygenated fuel additives: a review

Rising pollution levels, global warming, and depletion of conventional energy resources have driven researchers to seek long-term solutions of these problems. Biofuels are one of the possible alternatives being explored all over the world, owing to the near diesel combustion properties and lower emissions of biofuels. However, biodiesel has its own limitations, such as lower calorific value, higher density, higher specific fuel consumption, and more NOx emissions. Fuel additives play a vital role in overcoming these limitations and thus can maintain the biodiesel at par with the diesel of various international standards. In this chapter the critical analysis of the effects of various oxygenated fuel additives (OFAs) on performance and emission properties of diesel engine has been done. The effects of many OFAs have been studied to determine how they improve the quality of biodiesel in terms of performance and emission characteristics.
