Risk Factors for Perceived Stigma about Food Allergies among Adolescents

Adolescents who have food allergies, many of which may be life threatening, experience psychosocial difficulties, specifically embarrassment and stigma. Negative perceptions can increase non-adherence to recommended allergen avoidance practices, which may explain their increased risk for severe reactions. This study examined factors associated with adolescent perceptions of stigma related to their food allergy diagnosis.
