Risky Sexual Activity and Its Impact on Mental and Physical Health in Older Adults

This chapter explores the concept of risky sexual behaviour as it is related to the physical and mental health of older adults. Given the increased awareness of the benefits of sexual activity among the elderly, and increased evidence of the prevalence of sexual activity among older adults, it is essential that an awareness of the risks of such activities among this population is considered, particularly among medical professionals. While highlighting the noticeable lack of evidence in this area, this chapter first articulates how risky sexual behaviours are conceptualised and the impact associated with such activities (e.g. the increased levels of sexually transmitted infections). We also consider potential physical and mental health-related factors that are worthy of consideration while also highlighting key areas of attention for those engaged in health promotion around sex and sexual health.
