Some Other Stars

Abstract A rather diverse group of both amateurs and professionals, geologists and non-geologists, medics and clergymen was characterised by a great range of accomplishments and interests. They included Eleanor Coade, who made artificial rocks; Peter Orlando Hutchinson, the polymath from Sidmouth; John Clavell Mansel-Pleydell, a soldier; John Coode, an engineer; Vaughan Cornish, who helped to establish National Parks; John Green, from the colonial service; Ernest Burton, an artist; Marie Stopes, famed for her work on birth control but also a paleobiologist of note; and Alan Carr, who worked for the Nature Conservancy and became the foremost authority on the geomorphology of Chesil Beach.
