摘要
d-chiro-inositol is a naturally occurring compound that proved to be an indirect mediator of the insulin signaling pathway and has a steroidogenic effect as well. This effect is achieved as a result of the downregulation of the aromatase gene, which has a double effect. As aromatase is the effector of estrogen synthesis, d-chiro-inositol reduces the estrogen serum levels and increases the androgen serum levels. For this reason, researchers considered several different applications for d-chiro-inositol supplementation in women, depending on the biochemical effect desired. This is a relatively new field of research that has seen a substantial number of studies taking place to demonstrate the potential application in women with PCOS. These studies resulted in intriguing and not always obvious results. However, there are other potential conditions that could benefit from d-chiro-inositol supplementation in appropriate and targeted indications.
