d-chiro-inositol is a naturally occurring compound that proved to be an indirect mediator of the insulin signaling pathway and has a steroidogenic effect as well. This effect is achieved as a result of the downregulation of the aromatase gene, which has a double effect. As aromatase is the effector of estrogen synthesis, d-chiro-inositol reduces the estrogen serum levels and increases the androgen serum levels. For this reason, researchers considered several different applications for d-chiro-inositol supplementation in women, depending on the biochemical effect desired. This is a relatively new field of research that has seen a substantial number of studies taking place to demonstrate the potential application in women with PCOS. These studies resulted in intriguing and not always obvious results.
