Teaching expertise: an activity system's lens

What is entailed in expert teaching practices? This chapter argues that the notion of expertise should be expanded from a person-centered view to an activity-centered view; it should focus on individuals and activity systems simultaneously. Concentrating on teaching expertise, this chapter synthesizes some classical and emerging lines of expertise research, including deliberate practice, adaptive expertise, knowledge building and networked expertise in professional expert cultures, and relational expertise. It also introduces some ecological perspectives and argues that studies of expertise should adopt methods that zoom in on specific aspects of expertise and zoom out to unpack how expert teaching emerges in activity systems.
