International trends on teacher evaluation

In this chapter, we draw on the need for developing effective teacher evaluation systems based on valid theories to identify effective teachers. In this context, the main elements of a comprehensive teacher evaluation system are described in the second section of the chapter and the need for establishing meta-evaluation mechanisms is emphasized in the third section. In the fourth section of the chapter, an overview of the findings of a recent meta-analysis of 156 international studies on teacher evaluation is presented and in the last section, implications for research, policy and practice on teacher evaluation are drawn.
