Abstract
Although spirituality and religion have remained an intrinsic part of human nature for millennia, mental health disciplines have historically ignored patients' spiritual and religious lives. This article defines spirituality and religion and elucidates the effects of various components of spirituality and religion such as religious importance, belief in God, and religious behaviors such as church attendance on mental health. Further, the article outlines the effects of spirituality and religion on mental health outcomes as well as the benefits of incorporating spirituality and religion into psychotherapy. Finally, future directions are discussed.
