Structural flexibility in cationic metal–organic framework for boosting ReO4− capture

•We report the proof-of-concept of structural flexibility for boosting ReO4− uptake.•This unique route could promote 1.9-fold enhancement in ReO4− uptake, without preparing new material.•The structural flexibility and phase-dependent ReO4− uptake was completely disclosed by experiments and DFT calculation.
