Cost-Effectiveness Analysis

Cost-effectiveness analyses enable rational allocation of health care resources. In this chapter we describe the basic analytical framework for a cost-effectiveness analysis. We then describe extended cost-effectiveness analysis, an advancement in methodology that allows for consideration of complex societal goods, including equity and financial risk protection. Finally, we provide examples of cost-effectiveness analysis application in the Disease Control Priorities initiative and in hypertension management.
