•Microwave heating has been applied to the solvent-free HEUR synthesis.•Faster melting of PEG and faster rate of polymerization is possible with microwaves.•Microwave irradiation decreases the overall processing time.•Rapidly rising/unsteady transient temperature profiles favor polymerization.•MW-assisted HEUR synthesis needs 3 times less energy than conventional heating.
