•A shaking table test on the dynamic behavior of a scaled-down Geiger-type CFRP cable dome model is carried out.•New types of joint forms and anchoring configurations for CFRP cable dome structures are proposed.•The dynamic characteristics of cable domes under different seismic waves are revealed.•The relationship between the dynamic response of cable dome and the spectral characteristics of seismic waves is revealed.
